Erectile dysfunction

When do you have erectile dysfunction? That is a question that concerns many men. If you have erectile dysfunction, this can reduce the carefree feeling during sexual intercourse. You can also enjoy less. Whenever the disorder occurs, it can cause a feeling of fear and disappointment. The question that then arises is whether it will not work next time. This can lead to less self-confidence, which can affect the relationship with a partner. You don’t have to think that you are the only one experiencing this problem. In the Netherlands, several of the male residents often or always have a problem when it comes to getting an erection. There are various disorders that depend on different situations.

The development of an erection

Do you actually know how an erection occurs? An erection occurs when someone is sexually aroused. Substances are then released in the brain. These substances are then passed on to the penis via the nerve pathways. This ensures that more blood flows through arteries to the genitals. At the same time, blood is not released from veins for a while. So more blood goes to the penis than flows out. This entire process ultimately results in an erect penis.

Physical causes

There may be physical causes underlying erection problems. There may be something wrong with the blood vessels. These vessels are okay if you have a good morning or night erection at least sometimes. Damaged nerves can also cause an erection problem. This can occur during certain operations such as prostate operations, abdominal operations and back operations. It happens that medications and diseases have a negative effect on the erection. Below are a number of factors that can cause reduced potency:

  • Diabetes
  • Diseases of the cardiovascular system
  • Having too high blood pressure
  • Kidney problems
  • Infections in the genitals and urinary tract
  • A trauma to the pelvis
  • Illness in the brain or nerve pathways
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Smoking
  • Too little exercise and obesity

Psychological causes

Psychological factors can also cause you to almost no or difficulty getting an erection. We list these causes for you below:

  • If you start worrying about physical changes. These are things that are part of life and growing older.
  • Afraid that bed performances will not work and that intercourse cannot take place.
  • Stress that arises in someone’s daily life. It can’t be good to worry about money, children and work.
  • Are you in a husband-wife relationship? Then a woman’s physical changes can play a role. Women can experience pain during sex. This may be due to menopause. You as a man may be afraid of hurting her.
  • Divorces, deaths of partners or a new partner can play a role.

Solving erection problems

It is good to know that erection problems can be solved. We give a number of tips to get and keep an erection:

  • Write down a few weeks ago when you did or did not get a good erection. It is important to note where you were, who you were with and what you were thinking about.
  • It is possible to use additional incentives. Did you know, for example, that a sex product, lubricant and/or vibrator can help you get an erect penis? Use this first on yourself and possibly later also in the presence of a partner.
  • It’s okay if you’re afraid of not being able to get an erection. Then try something different. It is possible to arouse each other by caressing and massaging. You can do this, for example, for a period of 3 weeks. During these moments, don’t worry about whether or not you will get an erect penis. It can ultimately provide more self-confidence.

Medication use

The use of various medications can cause the penis to become less stiff. It may then sometimes be advisable to stop taking a medication or use a different medication. It is wise to discuss this with the doctor. It is never the intention to stop taking medication yourself. Perhaps pills you take for urinary complaints play a role. Then discuss with your GP how this can be stopped. Certain medications to lower blood pressure can cause erectile dysfunction. Please discuss this with your own GP. Sleeping pills, tranquilizers and medications for anxiety and depression can cause reduced potency. Do not stop yourself, but consult your doctor. These specialists are able to give you sound advice.

Erection problems over 50

Erection problems are more common in men as they get older. Using the right supplements can then be the solution. Research shows that several men in the Netherlands suffer from erectile dysfunction.

This is not strange and is part of growing older. As age increases, more people have an erection problem. Domestically, 24 percent of men between the ages of 51 and 60 sometimes experience problems with getting an erect penis. The percentage is 41 percent between the ages of 61 and 80 and 33 percent for those over 80. The fact that the average is lower for people over 80 is due to the fact that these people are often healthier.

Consequences of erectile dysfunction

From a medical point of view, erectile dysfunction does not have any serious consequences. It is not necessary to do anything about it. Most people find it nice to get started with it for themselves and their partner.

What can the doctor do?

Are you experiencing erection problems and do you want to tackle them? Then it is advisable to make an appointment with your doctor first. During your visit, a doctor can check whether the problems arise from physical or psychological causes. Some people benefit from some information about changes as they grow older. This can remove some of the uncertainty so that someone will experience fewer erection problems.

Erection pill

For most people over the age of fifty, the problems are not psychological but physical. Medication can then be an ideal solution for many people. It is possible that the doctor prescribes an erection pill. There are several erection pills. These pills improve sexual intercourse and erection.

Urinary problems and erectile dysfunction

Older men often experience erection problems in combination with urinary complaints. These problems can be treated in combination. Researchers state that there is a clear link between urinary complaints and erection problems if there is an enlarged prostate. Research has shown that treatment with erection pills has a positive effect on urinary problems.
